Monday October 07

Stopped in to see my old pal Mike Keneally at Guitar Center this evening.  Great to see/hear him and see that he is still going/growing strong.  He is currently touring on behalf of Taylor Guitars, and his ringing Taylor endorsements resonate with my own personal endorsement of these instruments.

Mike, however, needs no endorsement from me or anyone else.

His immense skill, talent, presence, and connection to music speaks for itself.

Also sat next to another musical acquaintance, Amy Denio, at the MK show.  Amy would be a great addition to the fall Seattle Circle House Concert line-up.  Amy and I both played on an a motoring rock track called Taxi De L'Espace with Matt Chamberlain for Joe Skyward's solo CD a few years ago.

Also nice to see my old MS DirectMusic pal Mark Burton in the audience.  Mark attended one of the early Seattle Guitar Circle weekend retreats at Seabeck Center back in the distant nineties.  And he is interested in finding out more about future weekend retreats.

Successful Protools experiments with TravisH this evening: yes, we can share sessions even though my system is from the ice age!!

Technology tools really only work well about 10% of the time; the rest of the time (like people) they need care, maintence, feeding, and massaging to keep them whistling pretty.   Also, recording is one long series of back-to back four-hour problems.

Hypothesis proven by my experience: the quantum unit of recording is equal to the quantum unit of technology problem solving: four hours.

Wednesday October 09

Tracked some live percussion on I Believe in Tomorrow this evening with TravisM.  Post-tracking: need to get some distance on this and see how it sits.

Also finally delivered rough tracks of South Central Rain and Time Stands Still to WalterH for consideration of upright bass tracking.

Thursday October 10

Work on cleaning up drum and guitar tracks for I am (not?) in Love with TravisM.  Hard work.  Paying off.  The basic tracks sound really good.  The tone pouring directly from TM's fingers on the bass line, even completely dry and un-effected, is wonderful.

Friday October 11

A very very long day of wall-to-wall meetings including a presentation of a detailed analysis of a well-known competing OS with a reputation for design excellence, loyal customers, and insanely great hype.

Some of the hype is well-deserved.  Other elements of the hype share the negative side of all hype: the wholesale smarmy delivery of empty promises.

Saturday October 12

Heard back from Steven Rhodes today, via email.  Thanks to PabloM and BillR for the contact info!  Steven is now in LA working as audio engineer for the likes of Counting Crows, The Vines, and Beck!  Hope he can find the DA-88s from our MS sessions a few years ago...

Sunday October 13

Quote of the day:

"Being positive all the time is about as useful as being negative all the time."

This was extracted from an email that was full of great quotes, but guaranteed to get me into trouble, so I'll leave it at this.

Monday October 14

Under the weather, sneezing like a maniac.  Nose running for public office.  And winning.

Tuesday October 15

Very busy week ahead, especially now that I've lost a day to fall allergies.

I'm afraid many Pri2 tasks and communications may fall by the wayside over the next month.  Those seeking to reach me during the rest of this month, please be patient.  To keep the balls I have in the air moving, I must focus on the foreground.  Apologies in advance.

Steve,

I have been listening to your material for a few years now. You have even been kind enough to send a few handwritten notes on occasion when you sent the CDs.

I am writing to see if you (+any associates) have any interest in coming to Dallas, TX in December of this year to participate in the first ever Progressive Rock Festival (humble beginnings) on December 7th. I am providing the URL to the website below:

http://www.gepr.net/cattleprog.html

I am helping to promote and manage this event. Two of the bands participating are excellent -
Hands and the Underground Railroad. They are true to the art of music in their efforts and performances.

I realize that this is probably out of the question since you play primarily on the West Coast, but I thought I would drop you a line and invite you in the remote chance you would be interested in getting some exposure out here in Pat Mastellotto country.

Let me know if this is at all possible, and if so, what assistance if any you would need to make the trip over here.

A Steve Ball Fan - LPC

Dallas, Texas

Hmm... Dallas in December.  Sounds interesting. Need to check with the guys.

Seattle Circle Weekend Retreat with Curt Golden and special guests Paul Richards and Bert Lams of the California Guitar Trio is kicking off today.  Best wishes to everyone who is working on this project.

Friday October 18

Mail boxes at work and at home filling to the brim.  And a growing list of un-returned phone calls.  Just in time, here comes the weekend.

Studio work, all day.

Sunday October 20

This evening, it was nice to see Seattle visitors Bert Lams, Steve Jolemore, Rob Rushin, and a pile of Seattle musicians that I don't see enough any more.  I dropped in briefly on the post-Seattle Circle weekend 'unwinder' just in time to hear Steve Turnidge unveil the new music technology project he's been working on.

Good stuff in the air in Seattle.  And I don't mean the rain.  I can tell good things happened at the course this weekend. TravisM is buzzing...

BTW, Steve Jolemore and Tobin Buttram (both in the room this evening) played with the very first SB Roadshow, then called 'Curtains' featuring our old pal Nigel Gavin.

Now that would be a reunion.
